Vietnam Creates 'Bun Helmets' for Thai Women Motorcyclists
For years, married Thai women in Vietnam had to choose between cultural tradition and road safety. Now a specially designed motorcycle helmet lets them honor both.
Ha Thi Binh faced an impossible choice every time she climbed onto her motorcycle to drive to work in Son La, Vietnam. As a married Thai woman, cultural tradition required her to wear her hair in a six-inch high bun, but Vietnamese law required all motorcyclists to wear helmets.
The high bun isn't just a hairstyle. It's a sacred symbol that shows a Thai woman is married, and letting her hair down in public would signal unfaithfulness to her husband.
"It's an affirmation that the woman is married," Binh explained to the humanitarian organization CARE. "We all do it the same way."
As the breadwinner for her family, Binh drives her motorcycle daily to her coffee cooperative company. For years, she and thousands of other Thai women tried cramming their buns under standard helmets, creating uncomfortable and dangerous situations.

Many women were forced to choose between following their cultural values or following traffic safety laws. Deputy chairman of Vietnam's National Traffic Safety Committee Khuat Viet Hung acknowledged the problem, stating that ordinary crash helmets simply failed to protect these women.
The Ripple Effect
After two years of development, Vietnam's Ministry of Science and Technology created a solution: motorcycle helmets with extra room specifically designed to accommodate traditional high buns. The helmets passed rigorous safety tests and were distributed to low-income households across six Vietnamese provinces.
Today, these "bun helmets" are a common sight on Vietnamese roadways. Thai women no longer have to sacrifice their safety for their traditions or compromise their cultural identity for legal compliance.
Binh and thousands of other Thai women can now ride confidently, honoring both their heritage and their wellbeing with every journey.
