Vietnam Readers Fund 2 New Homes for Struggling Families

Two fathers who feared they'd never give their children a safe home watched construction begin on May 27 in Tay Ninh Province, Vietnam, funded entirely by compassionate newspaper readers.

Le Van Gan, 52, nearly lost his leg in a workplace tree-cutting accident in 2025. He spent all his family's savings on medical treatment to avoid amputation, leaving them homeless in a crumbling shelter made of timber scraps and palm leaves.

Nguyen Quoc Ly, 47, has battled chronic spinal disease for years. His wife's factory salary of just $196 per month was the only income keeping their family afloat while their makeshift home deteriorated around them.

After Dantri/DTiNews newspaper shared their stories, readers in Vietnam and around the world donated more than $6,700 combined. Over $3,100 went to Gan's family and $3,660 to Ly's, enough to build each family a solid, safe home.

"If not for the support from readers, I do not know when we would have had the chance to rebuild our house," Ly said at the groundbreaking ceremony. He shared that his children would finally have a stable place to study and grow.

Local authorities confirmed both households were among the most disadvantaged families in Tan Long Commune. They praised the donations as a meaningful boost to local welfare efforts.

The Ripple Effect

This isn't an isolated act of kindness. Since April 2024, Dantri/DTiNews readers have funded 278 charity house projects for poor and disadvantaged families across Vietnam, with 239 already completed and families moved in.

The newspaper has become a bridge connecting people who want to help with families who desperately need it. From burn victims receiving $34,600 in donations to orphaned children getting educational support, the community continues showing up.

Each house represents more than walls and a roof. For Gan, it means his children won't worry about their father losing his ability to work. For Ly's family, it means stability his chronic illness could never threaten again.

Two more families will sleep safely tonight because thousands of strangers chose compassion.
