Virginia Creates First Chief Energy Officer Role

Virginia is stepping up its clean energy game with a brand new approach to keeping the lights on and bills affordable.

Governor Abigail Spanberger just created the state's first Chief Energy Officer position, a cabinet-level role designed to coordinate energy policy across multiple state agencies. She appointed Josephus Allmond, an attorney who has spent years fighting for affordable, clean energy solutions, to lead the charge.

The new position tackles several challenges at once. Virginia faces increasing electricity demand from data centers, needs to keep energy affordable for families, and must balance participation in the regional power grid while meeting ambitious clean energy goals.

Allmond brings serious credentials to the table. Since 2020, he has worked as an attorney at the Southern Environmental Law Center's Virginia office, representing communities and public interest groups in energy policy battles. His work has focused on making energy cleaner and more accessible for everyone, not just those who can afford premium rates.

Sarah Francisco, Virginia Office Director at SELC, praised the choice. She highlighted Allmond's deep knowledge of Virginia's energy system and his experience navigating complex regulatory processes at the State Corporation Commission.
