Virginia Sailing Group Gives Cancer Patients Free Respite

For cancer patients who've lost control over so much of their lives, steering a sailboat on Virginia's York River is giving them something powerful back.

Sail Beyond Cancer Virginia launched in spring 2025 with a simple but profound mission: offer free three-hour sailing trips to anyone touched by cancer. The nonprofit operates from a donated 41-foot sailing vessel named Solace, docked at York River Yacht Haven in Gloucester Point.

Executive Director Kim Lawver, herself a cancer survivor, explains what happens when families board. "When you get out on the river and get the sails up, we always invite the nominee up to the helm," she says. "For cancer patients who have lost so much control of their lives, they are finally in control of something again by steering the boat."

The program welcomes anyone currently in treatment or living with cancer, regardless of age or diagnosis. Each nominee can bring up to five guests along for the ride. Memorial sails are also available for families who've lost someone to cancer within the past three years, offering a peaceful way to remember loved ones.

No paperwork or proof of diagnosis is required. Anyone can nominate themselves or someone else from anywhere in the country, and sails are available seven days a week.

In just its first year, the Virginia chapter completed 316 combined respite and memorial sails. This year, Lawver hopes to add at least 100 more.

The Ripple Effect

The impact extends far beyond the three hours on the water. Cancer patients tell Lawver they scroll through photos from their sail during chemotherapy appointments. Family members say they still talk about the experience months later, reliving the peace they felt when the sails caught the wind.

Sail Beyond Cancer Virginia is one of five chapters nationwide, inspired by a Vermont founder who wanted to share the tranquility of sailing after going through cancer treatment herself. The Virginia chapter is now expanding throughout the state with hubs in Deltaville, Norfolk, and Hampton, making the program accessible to more families.

The organization runs entirely on volunteers serving as captains, first mates, and ambassadors, plus sponsorships from local businesses. Private boat owners can also partner to increase the number of mission sails available.

For families navigating the overwhelming reality of cancer, a few hours on the water offers something medicine can't: a moment to breathe, steer, and remember what peace feels like.
