Volunteers Pack Books for Kids Who've Never Owned One

Some kids in Western Massachusetts are about to receive something that could change their lives: their very first book to call their own.

Volunteers gathered at Link to Libraries in Hampden this week to pack dozens of books headed straight to local children. Among them were members of the Western Mass News team, who spent their morning making sure young readers get the access they need to build strong literacy skills.

For many families, buying books simply isn't an option. Link to Libraries fills that gap by getting books directly into the hands of kids who need them most.

"A book can change a life. It's as simple as that," explained Laurie Flynn, President and CEO of Link to Libraries. "In order for kids to be successful in school and in life, we have to know how to read, and in order for kids to become strong readers, they need access to books."

The volunteers carefully boxed book after book, knowing each one represents a doorway to new worlds for a child. For some students, opening that first package will mark the beginning of a lifelong relationship with reading.
