Volunteers Save Story County Fair After Iowa Flooding

A county fair in Iowa is opening on schedule this week, rescued by volunteers who refused to let floodwater wash away opportunities for local kids.

Last week, Indian Creek overflowed and sent floodwaters rushing across the Story County Fairgrounds in Nevada, Iowa. The damage was extensive, threatening to cancel one of the most important events of the year for young people across the county.

"These are the first opportunity that these kids have had in many cases to come, show their project off and get it ready for the state fair," said Kelly Sheets, a Story County Fair Board member. "I think it instills a lot of confidence."
