Wales Wind Farm Powers 81,000 Homes, Creates 300 Jobs

South Wales is about to become home to a clean energy project that will transform both the local economy and thousands of household energy bills.

The Twyn Hywel Energy Park in Caerphilly won approval in the UK government's latest clean energy auction, clearing the way for construction to begin this spring. The 14-turbine wind farm will generate enough power for more than 81,000 homes while offsetting the carbon emissions of every car in Caerphilly for 40 years.

Developer Bute Energy spent six years working with local residents, businesses, and organizations to shape the project. That partnership approach is now paying off in concrete benefits for the region.

The project will create more than 300 jobs during construction, with salaries running 26% above the Welsh average. A dedicated job coach from Big Issue Recruit will help local residents overcome barriers to employment and secure positions on the project.

Once operational, the wind farm will pump £1.6 million annually into local business rates, totaling £64 million over its 40-year lifetime. Welsh businesses will handle more than 80% of operation and maintenance work, worth £108 million.

The Ripple Effect

Communities surrounding the wind farm will gain access to a £703,500 annual investment fund once construction wraps. Local organizations, charities, and community energy projects can apply for grants determined by a local panel.

That steady funding stream means decades of support for grassroots priorities, from youth programs to environmental initiatives. The fund structure was designed with input from community members who will ultimately decide how the money gets spent.

The wind energy will also deliver better value for households than alternatives. At £147 per megawatt hour, onshore wind costs less than new gas generation and significantly less than new nuclear power at £124 per megawatt hour.

Community Investment Director Catryn Newton says the project represents more than just clean energy. It's about creating lasting opportunities for people and businesses across the region while supporting Wales' transition to renewable power.
