Walmart Finally Adds Apple Pay and Google Pay in 2026
After years of resistance, Walmart is bringing tap-to-pay to all its stores, making checkout easier for millions of shoppers. The retail giant starts rolling out Apple Pay and Google Pay this August.
If you've ever stood at a Walmart checkout wishing you could just tap your phone and go, your wait is finally over.
Starting August 24th, 2026, Walmart and Sam's Club locations will begin accepting Apple Pay and Google Pay at their registers. The feature will reach all US stores by the end of this year, with gas stations following by mid-2027.
This marks a major shift for America's largest retailer. For years, Walmart resisted the contactless payment trend that swept through nearly every other major store.
The company even backed a failed mobile payment service called CurrentC before launching its own Walmart Pay app in 2016. That system required shoppers to scan QR codes rather than simply tapping their phones.
As recently as last year, a Walmart spokesperson insisted the company offered plenty of "convenient solutions" without Apple Pay or Google Pay. But customer demand apparently changed their minds.

"We want customers and members to have choice in how they pay, so they can check out in the way that works best for them," Walmart announced Friday. Tap-to-pay will join existing options like cash, credit cards, and Walmart Pay.
The change affects roughly 4,600 Walmart stores and 600 Sam's Club locations across the United States. Millions of shoppers who've grown accustomed to contactless payments everywhere else can now use the same system at Walmart.
The Ripple Effect
This decision goes beyond just convenience for Walmart shoppers. It represents how customer voices can shift even the biggest corporations when enough people speak up.
For elderly shoppers and people with disabilities, tap-to-pay often proves easier than fumbling with cards or cash. Parents juggling kids and groceries can check out faster with one quick tap.
The move also signals that even retail giants eventually embrace industry standards when customers make their preferences clear. Sometimes the best innovations happen when companies finally listen.
Your grocery run just got a whole lot simpler.
