Walmart Opens 100th EV Charging Site in 20 States

Walmart just hit a charging milestone that's good news for anyone considering an electric vehicle.

The retail giant opened its 100th company-owned EV fast-charging site at a Supercenter in Monument, Colorado. These charging stations now span 100 Walmart locations across 20 states, bringing fast charging to communities where people already shop for groceries.

The timing matters. One of the biggest worries for potential EV buyers is finding convenient places to charge. By installing chargers at stores people already visit, Walmart is solving a practical problem while customers grab what they need.

"By expanding EV fast charging at Walmart locations across the country, we're giving drivers a dependable way to charge while they're in the store," said Shayne Wahlmeier, Senior Vice President of Walmart Energy. The company's massive footprint across America positions them to make EV charging as normal as filling up on gas.

Most Walmart charging locations feature between 8 and 16 fast-charging stalls. These aren't slow trickle chargers. The stations can deliver up to 400 kilowatts of power, meaning drivers can add significant range during a typical shopping trip.

The chargers work with both CCS and NACS connectors, making them compatible with most electric vehicles on the road today. That means fewer compatibility headaches for drivers trying to figure out if their car will work at a particular station.

The Ripple Effect

This expansion does more than just add charging stations. It signals that electric vehicles are becoming mainstream enough for America's largest retailer to invest heavily in the infrastructure.

When Walmart commits resources to something, it often reflects where consumer behavior is heading. Their charging network makes EVs more practical for people in smaller communities that might not have attracted standalone charging companies yet.

The placement strategy is particularly smart. Walmart stores sit along highways and in town centers across America. Drivers making longer trips can plan charging stops where they can stretch their legs, grab a snack, and knock out errands instead of sitting at a highway rest stop.

This network also benefits the electric grid. Walmart can manage when and how these chargers draw power, potentially using them during off-peak hours or integrating them with renewable energy sources at their stores.

As more automakers shift toward electric vehicles, infrastructure like this removes one more reason people hesitate to make the switch.
