Washington Medicaid Now Covers AI Companion for Seniors

Loneliness isn't just an emotion for seniors living alone. It's a health crisis that increases the risk of cognitive decline, depression, and other serious conditions.

Washington state just took a groundbreaking step to address it. The state became the first in the nation to cover ElliQ, an AI-powered companion robot, through Medicaid for eligible seniors and people with disabilities.

ElliQ isn't just another gadget. The system offers daily check-ins, medication reminders, and engaging conversations designed specifically for older adults who want to age at home with dignity.

The device uses voice commands and simple onscreen instructions, making it accessible even for people who aren't tech-savvy. It can suggest wellness activities, help connect users with family and caregivers, and provide emotional support through two-way conversations.

Washington tested ElliQ through a pilot program in 2023 with the Olympic Area Agency on Aging. The results showed just how much seniors were craving this kind of connection.

Participants engaged with ElliQ an average of 60 times per day. Every single person in the study said it improved their wellness, and 95% reported feeling less lonely.

Beyond emotional support, the AI companion helped participants stay on top of their health. Users completed an average of 145 health-related activities and 130 wellness activities each year, from exercise routines to mindfulness practices.

Medication reminders led to better health outcomes overall. Participants reported decreased depression and anxiety, with 43% saying they felt safer and less anxious thanks to ElliQ's presence.

The Ripple Effect

This decision does more than help Washington seniors. It creates a blueprint for other states to follow and establishes the first formal Medicaid reimbursement model for AI health technology at the state level.

Caregivers benefit too. A companion app lets family members monitor engagement, set care goals, and receive updates without managing every detail of daily care themselves.

Eligible Medicaid recipients receiving services at home can now choose ElliQ as part of their care plans. Case managers across Washington will help identify participants and coordinate deployment, with Medicaid covering the full cost.

Intuition Robotics, the company behind ElliQ, has already deployed the system with thousands of older adults across the country. Now those deployments can expand beyond time-limited programs to sustainable, state-funded care.
