Washington Unemployment Hits 4.9% in Second Monthly Drop

Washington workers are finding jobs at a steady pace, with the state's unemployment rate dropping to 4.9% in August.

The decline marks the second straight month of improvement, signaling that more people are successfully landing employment across the state. The Washington State Employment Security Department released the encouraging numbers on September 16.

The improvement came with an interesting twist. While the state lost about 900 jobs overall in August, the unemployment rate still fell because fewer people remained jobless.

"The estimated tally of jobs decreased in August, however, the number of unemployed job seekers also decreased, resulting in a lower unemployment rate," explained Anneliesse Vance-Sherman, chief labor economist with the Employment Security Department.

The mixed picture showed different sectors moving in different directions. The public sector added roughly 8,100 jobs, helping offset a loss of 9,000 positions in the private sector.

Manufacturing led private sector gains, showing strength in one of the state's key industries. Professional and business services saw the largest drops, though the overall trend pointed toward progress for job seekers.
