Waymo Expands Robotaxis by 250 Square Miles in 5 Cities
Self-driving car company Waymo just added nearly 250 square miles of coverage across five cities, bringing its fully driverless taxi service to new neighborhoods from LA beaches to San Jose suburbs. The expansion marks another leap forward in making autonomous transportation a normal part of daily life.
Waymo is rolling out its self-driving cars to 250 more square miles of American cities, and no human drivers are needed.
The robotaxi company announced this week that riders in Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego, and the San Francisco Bay Area can now hail driverless rides to significantly more destinations. In LA, the service now reaches down the coast through Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach to Torrance. San Diego riders can travel all the way north to La Jolla, less than two months after the service launched there.
The expansion is particularly impressive in newer markets. Nashville opened to public riders just in April with about 60 square miles of coverage. San Diego started in September with roughly 50 square miles.
Waymo now operates across 15 US cities and completes more than 500,000 paid rides every week. The company has logged over 1,400 square miles of service area, which is larger than the entire state of Rhode Island. It's even mapping Toronto for a 2028 launch.

The Ripple Effect
This expansion represents more than bigger maps. It signals that fully autonomous vehicles are becoming a reliable transportation option for everyday people going to work, the zoo, or the beach.
The technology is also proving itself at scale. Waymo logged 3.9 million rider-only miles per week in the second quarter of 2026, demonstrating that these aren't just test rides but real transportation solving real problems for hundreds of thousands of people.
Because robotaxis run on electric power, every mile driven means cleaner air in the neighborhoods they serve. As the service areas grow and connect, they're building the foundation for a transportation system that's safer, more accessible, and better for the environment.
The updated coverage maps are already live in the Waymo app, making it easy for riders to see where they can catch a driverless ride today.
Self-driving cars are moving from science fiction to daily reality, one neighborhood at a time.
