Archaeologists expected nothing when they dug beneath Pembroke Castle in Wales, but instead found one of Britain's most remarkable prehistoric discoveries.
The Wogan Cavern sits beneath the 11th-century castle where King Henry VII was born. For years, experts dismissed it as a Victorian excavation with little archaeological value.
They were spectacularly wrong.
The cave revealed evidence of early humans from 45,000 years ago, likely Neanderthals from even earlier, and animal remains dating back 120,000 years. Among the bones: hippopotamuses, woolly rhinoceroses, mammoths, reindeer, and wild horses.
"Despite the limited work done so far, we can already say that Wogan Cavern is a truly remarkable site," said Rob Dinnis, excavation director for the University of Aberdeen. The team also discovered stone tools and signs of human activity across multiple time periods.
The hippo bones are especially telling. They date to the last interglacial period 120,000 years ago, when Britain's climate was warm enough for African animals to roam what is now Wales.

Only a handful of British sites can show the transition from Neanderthals to modern humans. Wogan Cavern may be the best of them all.
The cave's sediment is remarkably well preserved. Pilot studies show that ancient DNA survives in both the bones and cave floor, giving scientists an unprecedented window into how our ancestors lived.
"The project's team of specialists are excited to learn as much as possible about the cave and its early inhabitants, animal and human, in the coming years," said Kate Britton, an archaeology specialist at the University of Aberdeen.
The cavern's large size and flat floor made it ideal for habitation across the ages. Evidence shows it served as a home for hunter-gatherers after the last Ice Age 11,500 years ago, sheltered Romans, and stored medieval supplies.
Today it houses greater horseshoe bats, continuing its role as a safe haven for living creatures.
The team plans intensive excavations in May, expecting to uncover more evidence of the relationship between Neanderthals and early humans. Jon Williams, Pembroke Castle manager, said the discoveries represent a dramatic shift from the medieval history the site typically reveals.
"There is no other site like it in Britain," Dinnis said, "it is a once-in-a-lifetime discovery."
