Welsh Cyclist Emma Finucane Wins Historic 4 Golds at 23

A 23-year-old cyclist from Wales just rewrote the history books at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and she can barely believe it herself.

Emma Finucane became the first track cyclist ever to win four gold medals at a single Commonwealth Games. Her historic achievement happened at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, named after one of Britain's greatest cycling legends who never managed the feat himself.

Finucane's incredible week started with a team sprint victory alongside teammates Rhian Edmunds and Lowri Thomas. She then dominated the individual sprint, crushed the 1,000m time trial, and sealed her fourth gold in the keirin on the final day of competition.

The pressure was intense throughout the week, especially after media questions about whether she could achieve the impossible fourth gold. "After yesterday, the media were asking can you do four," Finucane said. "In that semi-final I nearly didn't get through so I just enjoyed that final."

Her 12-hour competition day ended with an honor that made the achievement even sweeter. Finucane was chosen to carry the Welsh flag into the closing ceremony, representing a nation she normally doesn't get to compete for at Olympics and World Championships.

When compared to legends like Sir Chris Hoy, Victoria Pendleton, and Jason Kenny, she refuses to see herself in their class. "They are icons of the sport. Absolute legends," she said. "To even have my name beside them is insane."

Her teammate Lewis Oliva sparked something special in her with a speech about Welsh pride. "He ignited a fire in me," Finucane revealed through tears. "I was determined to ride for Wales and was going to do it with passion."

That passion fueled Wales' best-ever cycling performance at the Commonwealth Games with 11 total medals. Finucane alone won nearly half of Wales' gold medals at the entire Games.

Behind the medals stands a support network that keeps her grounded. Her parents and sister watched from the stands while her boyfriend Matthew Richardson, recovering from a cycling injury in Japan, called her at 2am his time to celebrate. "They love me no matter what," she said. "They'll text me if you win or lose and that means everything."

Now an Olympic champion at 21 and a Commonwealth Games record-holder at 23, Finucane isn't thinking about Los Angeles 2028 just yet. For once, she's choosing to live in the moment and savor what the 10-year-old version of herself would be screaming about.
