Welsh Cyclist Zoe Backstedt, 21, Wins World Silver Medal

At 21 years old, Zoe Backstedt crossed the finish line at cycling's Road World Championships in Montreal with a beaming smile and a silver medal around her neck.

"I'm happy, but at the same time I also came here for gold," she said after finishing second in the elite time trial. It's the kind of response that shows both youthful joy and championship mindset wrapped into one.

Backstedt grew up in Pontyclun, south Wales, in a household where cycling was basically the family business. Her father Magnus won Paris-Roubaix, one of cycling's most grueling one-day races. Her mother Megan won the British Road Race national title and represented Great Britain at World Championships.

For years, young Zoe actually hated the sport. She juggled netball, tennis, and athletics alongside cycling, and would tell her dad she didn't want to ride for more than two hours.

Then at age 10 or 11, something clicked. "One day I thought this is what I want to do," she told the BBC.

The results speak for themselves. By 20, Backstedt had already won nine world titles across cyclo-cross, road, and track cycling. At 17, she became the youngest ever winner of a women's elite cycling race in Belgium.

Why This Inspires

What makes Backstedt's story so compelling isn't just her medal collection. It's her approach to challenges and setbacks.

In 2024, sickness kept her out of the Paris Olympics. A broken hand and wrist interrupted her 2025 cyclo-cross season. Instead of letting these moments define her, she used them as fuel.

She returned to win a stage at the Tour de Suisse Femmes in June. She defended her British time trial crown and won her first British road race title in Aberystwyth. She retained the Baloise Ladies Tour title, remaining the youngest winner of that race.

"It's brutal climbing here, but I really like it," she said after demolishing the field at the under-23 world time trial in Rwanda last year, finishing nearly two minutes ahead of her nearest rival.

Now competing at the elite level, Backstedt finished second to 35-year-old Swiss champion Marlen Reusser. "I'm over the moon with my performance," she said. "It was really a crazy long time trial so to take home the silver medal, I'm super proud of that."

Most riders would choose to specialize in one discipline, but not Backstedt. She plans to keep competing across cyclo-cross, road, and track cycling because she genuinely enjoys the variety.

She's not done in Montreal either, lining up as one of Great Britain's leaders in the road race this weekend.

A hard race is just the way she likes it.
