West Virginia Students Surpass Pre-Pandemic Test Scores

West Virginia students just proved that learning loss doesn't have to be forever.

New state assessment results show that math and English proficiency levels have returned to where they were before COVID-19 disrupted classrooms in 2020. In some areas, students are actually performing better than they did before the pandemic hit.

The recovery marks a significant turnaround after years of concern about how school closures and remote learning affected academic achievement. State education officials say the gains reflect sustained effort from teachers, students, and families working together to rebuild.

"We're actually trying to put the pandemic in the past and we're trying to move forward," said Vaughn Rhudy, Director of Assessment at the West Virginia Department of Education. "We want to continue to build upon what we've seen in terms of the improvements in student achievement."

The state isn't declaring victory yet. About 39% of students currently meet proficiency standards in math, which means most students still need additional support to reach grade-level expectations.

Eleventh graders face particular challenges. Only 21% of juniors are proficient in math, and English proficiency among high school juniors dropped slightly this year to 51%.

The Ripple Effect

The comeback story extends beyond test scores. It shows that targeted interventions and consistent support can reverse learning setbacks that once seemed insurmountable.

Andy Shamblin, a Kanawha County teacher and state delegate, sees the results as both encouraging and clarifying. "I think we should be pleased with what we're seeing because it tells us that we're finally moving in the right direction, but there's still way too many students that aren't meeting basic proficiency standards," he said.

The progress also raises important questions about consistency. West Virginia maintains a 93% graduation rate while only 39% of students demonstrate proficiency on state tests, suggesting that assessments capture just one dimension of student success.

Education officials emphasize that standardized tests provide only a snapshot of what students know. Performance on any given testing day can be influenced by factors beyond academic preparation, from what happened at home that morning to whether students see the test as relevant to their future plans.

The state is now focusing on sustaining momentum and expanding support for students who need it most. The recovery from pandemic-era disruption proves that educational setbacks can be overcome with sustained commitment and resources.

West Virginia's students are moving forward, and so are their test scores.
