Western Michigan Athletes Hit Record 3.42 GPA
Every single varsity team at Western Michigan University just achieved something that's never happened before: a 3.0 GPA or better. The department's combined 3.42 GPA marks the highest academic performance in school history.
Student athletes at Western Michigan University just proved you can excel in the classroom and on the field at the same time.
The Broncos closed out their academic year with a department record 3.42 combined GPA. Even more impressive? For the first time ever, all 15 varsity teams earned at least a 3.0 GPA.
The men's programs shattered their own records with a combined 3.29 GPA, the highest in department history. The football team posted a 3.11 GPA, its second-best performance ever, while men's soccer reached a program-record 3.71.
Golf led the pack with a stunning 3.78 GPA. Softball wasn't far behind at 3.72, also a program record.
The numbers get even better when you look closer. Out of all Bronco student athletes, 285 earned GPAs of 3.0 or higher this spring. Another 216 hit at least 3.5, and 66 students achieved perfect 4.0s.

Ashley Williams, Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Services, credited the team effort. She thanked her staff, coaches, and administrators for making academics a priority alongside athletic excellence.
The NCAA's Academic Progress Rate scores backed up the success story. Five teams earned perfect 1000 scores: men's tennis, women's basketball, women's tennis, cross country, and golf. Six more teams scored above 990.
Overall, 13 of the 15 Western Michigan teams beat the national average for their sports. The APR tracks whether student athletes stay eligible, remain enrolled, and graduate, giving a full picture of academic health over four years.
The Ripple Effect
This achievement shows other schools what's possible when universities truly invest in student success. Western Michigan didn't just help a few star students shine. They lifted every single team, creating a culture where academic excellence became the standard, not the exception.
Dr. Gary Bischoff, WMU's Faculty Athletic Representative, noted the timing matters too. During uncertain times in college athletics, Western Michigan keeps proving the "student" part of student athlete still means something.
The record comes as many universities struggle to balance athletic demands with academic performance. Western Michigan found a way to raise both bars at once, showing students they don't have to choose between their passions and their education.
In Kalamazoo, they're calling it the City of Champions for good reason.
