Widow Donates $26K Media Center to Honor Journalist Husband

When Sarwat Hussain graduated from Osmania University's journalism program in 1989, he carried more than a degree. He carried a foundation that would lift him from a local institute in India to the highest ranks of the World Bank in Washington, D.C.

Now his widow, Vidya Bhandarker, has given today's students the same chance he had. She donated nearly ₹20 lakh (about $26,000) worth of professional equipment to establish the Sarwat Hussain Digital Media Centre at the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication.

The center opened this month with two high-end professional cameras and a customized Apple Studio computer system. Vice-Chancellor Kumar Molugaram inaugurated the facility at the University College of Arts and Social Sciences.

Hussain's journey shows what quality education can unlock. After earning his bachelor's and master's degrees in journalism from Osmania University, he spent 16 years at ICRISAT before joining the World Bank in 1992. Over the next 25 years, he climbed steadily through the organization, eventually becoming head of Communications for the Agricultural Global Practice before retiring in 2017.

Bhandarker remembers exactly what made the difference. "Access to quality education enabled him to grow professionally at ICRISAT, and the degrees from Osmania University gave him the foundation to enter the World Bank and fuel his meteoric rise over the next two-and-a-half decades," she said.

The spirit of giving inspired this gift. "We both admired deeply how alumni in the U.S. give back," Bhandarker explained. "We felt this was something we must do for Osmania University as well."

The Ripple Effect

This donation does more than honor one graduate's memory. It positions an entire department to teach modern digital storytelling to the next generation of Indian journalists.

Department Head Satish Thalladi said the center represents their commitment to evolving with the times. Faculty and students welcomed the contribution as both timely and transformative for the university's journalism program.

Bhandarker's hope extends beyond her own gift. She's calling on other Osmania University alumni to reconnect with their departments and help them grow. One person's generosity often inspires others to follow.

The equipment that now fills the Sarwat Hussain Digital Media Centre will train countless students in the skills that powered her husband's remarkable career, creating ripples of opportunity for decades to come.
