Firefighter crossing ladder bridge over rapids carrying beaver in rescue net

Wildlife Experts Rescue Stranded Beaver in Massachusetts

🦸 Hero Alert

A beaver stuck on a rock above rushing rapids got saved just in time when wildlife experts happened to be teaching police rescue techniques next door. The animal is now recovering and will return to the wild soon.

A sick beaver stranded on a rock above a waterfall got rescued in the most perfectly timed way possible.

Jane Newhouse and Steven Salowsky from Newhouse Wildlife Rescue in Chelmsford, Massachusetts were in the middle of teaching local police officers how to respond to wildlife emergencies. Right then, they got a call about a beaver that had been stuck on a rock in Billerica for two days, trapped in front of rapidly flowing water.

"I was like, 'is this really happening on this particular day where all these people came together'," Newhouse said. The timing couldn't have been more perfect for a live demonstration.

Billerica residents had noticed the beaver wasn't moving from its precarious spot. The animal was too weak to escape on its own, and the rushing waterfall made any rescue attempt dangerous.

The wildlife experts jumped into action alongside the Billerica Fire Department. Firefighters placed a ladder bridge across the rapids, and one brave firefighter crossed over the rushing water with a net in hand.

The rescue footage shows just how risky the operation was. Beavers weigh between 35 and 40 pounds, and this one was thrashing in the net as the firefighter carefully made his way back across the ladder over the rapids.

Sunny's Take

What makes this story shine is the incredible timing. These wildlife experts were literally teaching others how to save animals when they got called to do exactly that. It turned a training session into a real life rescue mission, showing everyone there what compassionate, skilled wildlife response looks like in action.

The beaver arrived at the rescue center suffering from wounds and an infection. Newhouse said they got there just in time because the animal likely wouldn't have survived another day on that rock.

The beaver is now recovering at Newhouse Wildlife Rescue and should be healthy enough to return to the wild within a few weeks. From stranded and sick to swimming free again, all because the right people were in the right place at exactly the right time.
