Decommissioned wind turbine parts are getting second lives as tiny houses, building facades, and even alpine skis across Europe. A retired wind turbine nacelle once perched atop an Austrian tower is now someone's cozy tiny home, complete with a kitchen, bathroom, and solar panels.

It's one of several creative solutions emerging as Europe races to recycle the growing number of wind turbines reaching retirement. The continent installed 8.8 gigawatts of new wind capacity in the first half of 2026, a 30 percent jump that's enough to power seven million households.

Swedish energy company Vattenfall partnered with design studio Superuse to transform the four-meter-wide nacelle cover into a fully functional living space. The tiny house debuted at Dutch Design Week in 2024, showcasing how massive turbine components could skip energy-intensive recycling and go straight to reuse.

Wind turbine blades are proving even more versatile. After the Nørre Økse Sø wind farm in Denmark shut down in 2023, its 57 blades didn't end up in a landfill. Instead, they became the striking facade of a multistory parking garage in Lund, Sweden.

Norwegian recycling company Gjenkraft and ski manufacturer EVI Ski took a different approach. They're extracting glass and carbon fibers from retired blades to manufacture alpine skis, turning weather-resistant materials into sporting equipment.

These innovations matter because recycling wind turbine blades is genuinely challenging. The components stretch 50 to 100 meters long and contain layers of glass fiber, carbon fiber, epoxy resin, balsa wood, and metals pressed tightly together. What makes them durable enough to spin in harsh weather for 25 years also makes them tough to break down.

About 90 percent of a turbine's mass (steel, copper, aluminum, and concrete) recycles easily. The composite blade materials are the puzzle. Separating them from resin requires high temperatures and specialized processes that can reduce the quality of recovered materials.

Since banning turbine blade landfilling in 2021, Vattenfall has pursued multiple recycling methods. Mechanical processes turn blade material into composite flakes for new products, while pyrolysis (thermal recycling) recovers fibers and secondary materials. When high-value recycling isn't possible, materials go through energy recovery or cement co-processing.

The Ripple Effect

The timing couldn't be better. Europe's first generation of major wind farms is reaching retirement age, which means more blades will need solutions in coming years. Vattenfall aims for 100 percent circularity of composite materials by 2030.

The unpredictable flow of decommissioned blades makes scaling recycling solutions economically tricky, says Eva Julius-Philipp, Vattenfall's Director of Environment and Sustainability. But as more turbines retire, the volume will support larger-scale operations.

Currently, only Austria, Finland, Germany, and the Netherlands have binding national bans on landfilling blades. WindEurope is pushing Brussels to make the commitment legally binding across all member states, and industry leaders hope the European Commission's upcoming Circular Economy Act will provide the regulatory framework needed to scale secondary raw materials markets.

From tiny houses to skis to building facades, retired wind turbines are proving that clean energy's second act can be just as innovative as its first.
