Wing Drones Deliver Groceries to Bay Area in 30 Minutes

Getting groceries delivered by drone isn't science fiction anymore for Bay Area residents who can now receive packages in half an hour or less.

Wing, the drone delivery company that began as a Google experiment, just launched home delivery service across Silicon Valley. The move brings the company full circle after it first tested its flying robots by shuttling office supplies around Google's Mountain View campus years ago.

Back then, Wing was still part of Google's X innovation lab, testing whether automated drones could safely deliver items. Early users loved the concept and immediately asked when they could get deliveries at home instead of just at work.

Now that future has arrived. Bay Area residents can order groceries, restaurant meals, or any small package weighing up to five pounds and watch it arrive by drone within 30 minutes.

The Bay Area expansion comes during a major growth year for Wing. The company added service to 150 new Walmart locations across major cities including Los Angeles, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Miami earlier in 2024.

Wing also received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to extend its operating hours from 9 AM to 9 PM in Charlotte and Dallas-Fort Worth. That means families can now order dinner delivered by drone after work.

While drone deliveries might still turn heads when they buzz overhead, the technology is quickly becoming more common across America. Wing's expansion demonstrates how innovation that starts as a moonshot experiment can transform into everyday convenience for regular families.
