Winnipeg Raises $80K for Type 1 Diabetes Cure

When rain threatened to dampen Winnipeg's annual Type 1 diabetes fundraising walk, participants had a simple response: Type 1 doesn't take a day off, so neither would they.

More than 400 people gathered at St. Vital Park on Saturday morning, walking through wet weather to raise funds for Type 1 diabetes research. The community didn't just show up. They crushed their goal, raising over $80,000 when organizers had hoped for $72,000.

Sixty-three teams participated in the Breakthrough T1D Walk, part of a national effort aiming to raise $3.1 million across Canada. For many participants, the walk wasn't just about fundraising. It was deeply personal.

Valerie Desjardins brought her family to support her son, who has lived with Type 1 diabetes for four and a half years. "It's nice that everybody gets together and for our son to see that he's not alone into this," she said.

Chelsea Binns, diagnosed in 2018, walked for the second year in a row with her six-month-old daughter and family members. She emphasized how crucial public awareness remains, noting that nearly everyone knows someone affected by diabetes.

For Claire, who has participated for four years straight, the walk offers something beyond fundraising. She gets to connect with others who truly understand the daily challenges of managing Type 1 diabetes.

"I look forward to this walk every year," Claire said. When asked what a cure would mean, her answer was simple: "It would mean everything."
