Wisconsin Approves 11 Clean Energy Projects in 2026

Wisconsin is catching up to its Midwestern neighbors with a record number of clean energy projects heading for approval this year. The shift could save residents money while reducing the state's reliance on imported fossil fuels.

Wisconsin is accelerating its clean energy future, with state regulators expected to approve 11 renewable projects in 2026 alone—more than most years combined.

The state has historically lagged far behind its neighbors. Minnesota currently has five times Wisconsin's wind capacity and more than 16 times its solar capacity, according to the Environmental Law and Policy Center.

But Amy Barrilleaux from Clean Wisconsin says that gap is finally closing. The wave of new solar and wind projects represents a major shift for a state that has relied heavily on coal and natural gas for decades.

The timing couldn't be better for Wisconsin residents. A bitter cold snap this winter exposed how vulnerable fossil fuel-dependent states are to price spikes. Natural gas prices surged during the freeze, causing energy bills across Wisconsin to jump.

"We don't have commodity prices on wind or on solar, and that's what makes these sources for energy now the least expensive ways to get energy in Wisconsin," Barrilleaux said.

The Darien Solar Energy Center, which became fully operational last year, shows the scale of what's possible. Its 600,000 solar panels now power roughly 75,000 homes across Walworth and Rock counties.

We Energies is investing billions more in solar and wind to replace aging fossil fuel plants. Spokesperson Brendan Conway notes the projects cost more upfront but require minimal maintenance and no fuel once built.

The Ripple Effect

Beyond cleaner air and stable prices, the renewable energy boom keeps more money in Wisconsin. The state currently spends $14 billion every year importing coal, natural gas, and oil from other states because it doesn't produce fossil fuels locally.

"We do have the unlimited natural resources of wind and sun," Barrilleaux said. Every solar panel and wind turbine built in Wisconsin means less money flowing out of state and more economic activity staying home.

The transition also reduces the kind of price shocks that caught residents off guard this winter. While building renewable infrastructure has contributed to higher electricity rates in the short term, energy experts expect long-term savings as fuel costs disappear from the equation.

Wisconsin's renewable energy future is finally arriving, powered by homegrown sun and wind.
