Wisconsin Cat Born With Record-Breaking 29 Toes

A fluffy kitten in Wisconsin is stepping into fame with the most remarkable set of paws ever documented.

Erebus Anomaly, a Maine coon cat owned by Kendra Vandenbloomer and Hunter Nett, just earned the Guinness World Record for the most toes on a cat. The fuzzy record holder was born with an astonishing 29 toes, 11 more than the typical 18 found on most cats.

The secret behind Erebus's extra digits is polydactyly, a harmless genetic trait that causes some cats to be born with bonus toes. While polydactyly appears fairly often in Maine coons, no cat has ever been documented with as many toes as Erebus.

The previous record of 28 toes belonged to a Canadian cat named Jake, who set the benchmark back in 2002. Earlier this year, a Michigan kitten named Toby tied Jake's record, but Erebus has now claimed the top spot with one additional toe.

Vandenbloomer and Nett, who run Blue Northern Maine Coons breeding business, knew they might have something special the moment Erebus was born. The couple's experience with Maine coons gave them the knowledge to recognize just how extraordinary their new kitten was.
