WNBA Players Win 4x Pay Raise in Historic New Deal

Professional women's basketball players just scored one of the biggest pay raises in sports history.

The WNBA and its players union reached a deal in principle on a new collective bargaining agreement early Wednesday morning, ending negotiations that sometimes ran until the wee hours. The agreement pushes average player salaries beyond $500,000, a fourfold increase from last season.

For the first time ever, player compensation will be directly tied to league revenue. That means as the WNBA grows, so do the paychecks.

"For the first time, player salaries are tied to a truly meaningful share of league revenue," said union president Nneka Ogwumike. The deal also upgrades facilities, staffing, and player support across the board.
