Woman Beats 4 Cancers, Finds Peace After Unthinkable Loss

🦸 Hero Alert

After losing her husband and toddler in a drunk driving crash, Tamara Mitchell has now survived four different cancers with help from her MD Anderson care team. She's learned to ask for help and found more joy in her life.

When Tamara Mitchell walked into MD Anderson Cancer Center in 2023, she'd already survived three different cancers and tragedies most people couldn't imagine.

The retired chemistry teacher had beaten chronic lymphocytic leukemia, kidney cancer, and breast cancer between 2018 and 2019. But when severe swelling appeared in her face and neck in 2023, she knew something was wrong.

Her local oncologist wanted to wait for symptoms. Tamara trusted her instincts and called MD Anderson instead, getting an appointment within two weeks.

Dr. Nitin Jain recommended immediate treatment with an oral medication that blocks proteins helping leukemia cells grow. "I was so comfortable with Dr. Jain," says Tamara, now 66. "He met me at my level of understanding."

In October 2025, a routine scan revealed a 4 cm tumor on her right kidney. Her fourth cancer diagnosis could have broken her spirit, but Tamara had survived worse.

On Easter 1991, a drunk driver hit her family's car head-on, killing her husband and two-year-old son. She and her daughter survived. Tamara donated her son's liver and still keeps in touch with the recipient.

"As horrible as that night was, it helped me look for the good in any situation," she says. "That really colored my cancer journey."

She'd already lost her father at 14 and her mother nine years later, both to heart attacks. The complex post-traumatic stress disorder that followed left her with severe insecurity about trusting doctors.

Dr. Surena Matin performed surgery to remove her kidney tumor. "He answered every question I had," says Tamara. "I've never felt so secure."

Sunny's Take

After facing unimaginable loss and four cancer diagnoses, Tamara has learned something powerful: asking for help isn't weakness. She moved to Houston to be closer to her daughter, her only remaining family.

"She's all I've got left," Tamara says. "I'm thankful if cancer had to happen, it happened to me and not her."

These days, Tamara focuses on finding joy in simple moments and trusting the care team that's helped her through each diagnosis. When problems arise, she asks herself: "OK, here's the issue. Now what are we going to do about it?"

That mindset, born from tragedy and refined through multiple cancer battles, has brought her more peace than she ever expected to find.
