Woman on Crutches Thanks Police Chief Who Restored Water

When Neetu Dwivedi walked into a police office on crutches last Friday, officers braced for another complaint. Instead, she came bearing a gift and tears of gratitude.

The 60-something resident of Sithra Bujurg village in Kanpur Dehat had spent two months fighting for something most of us take for granted: running water. While her neighbors received municipal water, her home and a few others were inexplicably left dry.

For Dwivedi, who relies on crutches to walk, fetching water meant painful treks to distant sources. She made the 25-kilometer journey to district offices repeatedly, spending hundreds of rupees on transportation each time. Officials turned her away. Some water department employees allegedly misbehaved and threatened her.

Then a video of her leaving an office on crutches caught the attention of Superintendent of Police Shraddha Pandey. The officer immediately dispatched personnel to investigate and coordinate with water authorities. Within days, water flowed to Dwivedi's home for the first time in months.

Dwivedi recorded a thank-you video, but it didn't feel like enough. She booked an auto-rickshaw and traveled to Pandey's office in person, arriving with her daughter at 1:15 pm with a pen as a token of appreciation.

When the two women met, Dwivedi began crying. Pandey, initially confused about why she'd come, pulled her into a hug and told her to reach out directly if she ever faced problems again.
