Woman's Hair Regrows After Scalding Burns in Weeks

Sonja Jacobs thought she might be scarred forever when boiling water burned the back of her head just hours before her brother's funeral.

The Eastridge woman was preparing for the service on May 16 when distraction led to a painful mistake. She poured hot water into a tub and dipped her head in without adding cold water first.

The burns were severe enough to leave painful wounds across her scalp. Mitchell's Plain Hospital staff immediately cleaned and assessed the damage, treating her for shock as well as the physical injuries.

But Jacobs almost didn't go back for follow-up care. The next day, despite intense pain, she refused to return to the hospital until her children convinced her the injury needed proper medical attention.

Doctors sent tissue samples to Tygerberg Hospital to determine how deep the damage went. When results came back, they brought relief. The burns weren't as severe as medical staff initially feared.

Still, Jacobs faced painful sores and a long healing process. Her son suggested trying an ointment he'd seen advertised online, and she decided to give it a shot alongside her medical treatment.

Then her hair started growing back faster than anyone expected. "It felt like a miracle," she said. "I still cannot believe how quickly it happened."
