Women Engineers Power UAE's Clean Energy Revolution

Women are designing the systems that will power and hydrate the United Arab Emirates for generations to come, and their impact is accelerating faster than anyone expected.

At Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), female engineers and technical specialists now hold one-third of all engineering positions, working on everything from massive solar projects to cutting-edge water desalination plants. The company celebrated their contributions on International Women in Engineering Day 2026, highlighting how these professionals are reshaping Abu Dhabi's entire energy landscape.

The numbers tell an impressive story. Women represent about a quarter of EWEC's total workforce, but they're concentrated in the areas that matter most for the future: renewable energy development, artificial intelligence applications, system planning, and grid management.

Eng. Mahra AlKhaja leads data management and AI initiatives at EWEC, where her team transforms complex information into practical decisions for Abu Dhabi's water and energy network. "The UAE's energy transition is moving forward quickly, and women engineers are playing an important role in making that happen," she explained.

Her colleague Eng. Zainab AlHaddad focuses on water system optimization, ensuring Abu Dhabi's water network runs efficiently while integrating large-scale reverse osmosis desalination plants. "We constantly analyze system data to balance supply and demand, improve efficiency and reduce the energy used in water production," she said.

These aren't just routine maintenance jobs. The female engineers at EWEC are helping deliver on massive national commitments: Abu Dhabi's Clean Energy Strategic Target 2035, the UAE Net Zero 2050 Strategy, and the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036.

The Ripple Effect

The impact extends far beyond individual careers or company diversity metrics. As these women develop smarter forecasting systems and strengthen critical infrastructure, they're creating blueprints that other Gulf nations and water-stressed regions worldwide will study and adapt.

EWEC supports this talent pipeline through mentoring programs, leadership development opportunities, and specialized training in renewable energy, desalination technologies, and grid reliability. The company says these investments aren't just good practice but essential to achieving the UAE's sustainability goals.

The timing couldn't be better. As the UAE expands its renewable energy projects and works to reduce its carbon footprint, it needs every brilliant mind it can find, regardless of gender.
