Women's Group Creates Scholarship for Single Parents

A Minnesota community organization is opening doors to higher education for students juggling parenthood and coursework.

The Brainerd Lakes Area Women of Today announced a new scholarship fund at Central Lakes College designed specifically for non-traditional students who are either women or single parents. The first recipient, Jaimie Johnson of Brainerd, is already pursuing her Pre-Social Work Transfer Pathway Associate of Science Degree with the financial support.

"Without having met the great gals in this organization my eyes would never had been opened to the amazing things we have in our community," said Gerrin Dehn, the group's membership vice president. She emphasized how meaningful it feels to help someone advance their career through education.

The scholarship addresses a real challenge many students face: balancing family responsibilities with the cost of college. Single parents and women returning to school often face unique financial pressures that can make completing a degree feel impossible.

Jon Aga, Central Lakes College's associate vice president of Advancement, praised the organization's commitment to supporting future community leaders. The foundation sees this scholarship as more than just tuition assistance—it's an investment in the next generation.
