World's Best-Selling Pen Becomes a Giant Glowing Lamp

That clear plastic pen sitting on your desk just became a work of art you can light up your living room with.

Bic teamed up with Italian design brand Seletti to transform the world's most popular pen into a massive glowing lamp. The Bic Cristal lamp stands at 12 times the size of the original pen, revealing a neon-like LED light inside its transparent body.

The lamp works as a floor piece, hanging pendant, or wall sconce, positioned either vertically or horizontally. It launches in the U.S. later this year in the pen's classic blue, red, and black colors for around $350.

This collaboration celebrates the 75th anniversary of a design so simple it's easy to overlook. Since 1950, more than 120 billion Bic Cristal pens have been sold worldwide, making it the best-selling pen in history.

The pen's genius lies in a tiny detail most people never notice. After buying the patent from Hungarian journalist László Biró, who invented the first ballpoint pen in 1938, Bic founder Marcel Bich made one crucial adjustment: a small air hole near the tip.

That simple hole prevents a vacuum from forming inside the pen, allowing ink to flow smoothly without clogging or leaking. Combined with a 1-millimeter ballpoint tip, this design solved problems that plagued earlier pens for decades.

Why This Inspires

The clear plastic body wasn't just a cost-saving choice. It was an aesthetic statement that let people see exactly how the pen works, turning a humble writing tool into something beautiful.

MoMA's senior curator Paola Antonelli captured it perfectly when the pen was featured in the museum's design exhibition. "It almost looks like it is within a crystal tube," she said. "It was such a beautiful use of plastic that almost made us think plastic could be precious."

The lamp takes that same transparency and scales it up, transforming everyday utility into something you want to display in your home.
