World's Largest Geothermal Plant Adds 25 MW in California

California just took a major step toward reliable clean energy that never sleeps.

The Geysers, the world's largest geothermal complex, completed a 25-megawatt expansion that taps into natural steam deep underground to power homes and businesses around the clock. Unlike solar panels that depend on sunshine or wind turbines that need breezy days, this energy source runs continuously, no matter what Mother Nature throws at it.

For over 65 years, The Geysers has quietly powered California by harnessing heat from beneath the earth's surface. The new expansion sends 18 megawatts to Clean Power Alliance, serving Southern California customers, while 7 megawatts support Bay Area residents and businesses through MCE.

"As California's electricity demand continues to grow, investments in reliable, around-the-clock renewable energy are more important than ever," said Aimee Blaine, senior vice president of Calpine's geothermal region. The timing couldn't be better as the state races to meet ambitious clean energy goals while keeping the lights on during peak demand.

The project was built under a labor agreement with local unions, ensuring skilled workers completed the critical piping infrastructure under strong labor standards. This means good jobs came alongside clean power.

The Ripple Effect

Geothermal energy solves one of renewable power's biggest challenges: consistency. While California has made huge strides with solar and wind, those sources can't provide power when the sun sets or the wind stops blowing. Geothermal fills that gap perfectly, offering baseload clean energy that keeps the grid stable.

The expansion strengthens California's entire power system, making it more resilient during extreme weather events and high-demand periods. Southern California and Bay Area residents now have access to more dependable clean electricity that doesn't compromise on environmental goals.
