World's Oldest Person Ethel Caterham Celebrates 117th Birthday

Ethel Caterham has seen 117 birthdays, and she says this one was lovely. The Surrey resident just became the first British person ever to reach 117 years old, holding the Guinness World Record as the world's oldest living person.

"I've had a lovely day celebrating with my family and friends, and I look forward to seeing what next year brings," Caterham told reporters. Her optimism at 117 captures the spirit that's carried her through more than a century of life.

Born on August 21, 1909, in southern England, Caterham has witnessed extraordinary history. She lived through both World Wars, multiple pandemics, and the reigns of six British monarchs, starting with King Edward VII.

Last year's birthday brought a special visitor. King Charles stopped by her senior home to celebrate her 116th birthday, shaking hands and chatting with the remarkable woman who remembered his coronation as Prince of Wales in 1969.

"All the girls were in love with you and wanted to marry you," Caterham teased the King during his visit. She also recalled watching his mother crown him at Caernarfon Castle when he was just 21 years old.

The King has made Caterham's milestones a priority. On her 115th birthday, he sent a personal letter congratulating her on reaching a "truly remarkable milestone."

Caterham was one of eight siblings and is now the last surviving person born during King Edward VII's reign. She has three granddaughters and five great-grandchildren who help celebrate each precious year.
