World's Oldest Shower Shoes Found at Hadrian's Wall

Imagine slipping on shower shoes before heading to the gym. Romans did the same thing 2,000 years ago.

Archaeologists at Vindolanda, an ancient Roman fort along Hadrian's Wall in England, have uncovered what may be the world's oldest shower shoes. The "bath clogs" feature wooden platform soles about 1 to 2 inches high topped with leather straps.

Romans called these slip-ons "sculponeae," and they weren't just fashionable. They were essential protection against dangerously hot bathhouse floors.

Roman bathhouses were communal social hubs where people moved from cold rooms to warm rooms to hot rooms before taking a final cold plunge. The floors were heated by a clever underground system called a hypocaust, where workers stoked furnaces beneath raised floors. That meant comfort for bathers but floors too hot to walk on barefoot.

The discovery site at Vindolanda has preserved over 5,000 Roman shoes in oxygen-free mud layers. About 50 of these are bath clogs, some plain and others decorated with geometric patterns or carved toe shapes.

Elizabeth Greene, an archaeologist at the University of Western Ontario, studies these ancient artifacts. She's investigating whether Romans used the clogs only for bathing or also as overshoes to protect against mud and snow, much like medieval Europeans did centuries later.

The bath clog is now on display at the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto through September 2027 as part of the Unearthing Vindolanda exhibit. Two even older children's bath clogs recently discovered in France may claim the title of world's oldest, but the Vindolanda collection remains the best-preserved window into Roman footwear.
