Wind turbines generating renewable energy on Wyoming's open plains under blue sky

Wyoming Secures 200 Megawatts of New Wind Power Capacity

😊 Feel Good

Despite federal headwinds, Florida-based NextEra Energy just locked in grid access for 200 megawatts of wind power in Wyoming, enough to power 150,000 homes. The deal signals renewable energy is still moving forward in the state, even as some developers pull back.

A major renewable energy company just secured a critical piece needed to bring more wind power to Wyoming, proving clean energy development isn't stopping despite recent setbacks.

NextEra Energy Resources reached an agreement with Black Hills Energy to reserve space on electric transmission lines for 200 megawatts of wind generation on Wyoming's east side. That's enough electricity to power around 150,000 homes once the projects come online.

The deal matters because it shows forward momentum at a time when Wyoming's renewable energy industry faces real uncertainty. PacifiCorp, the state's largest electric utility, recently removed new wind and solar projects from its future plans entirely. Federal tax credits that once made wind energy 30% cheaper to build are being phased out faster under new legislation.

NextEra itself canceled a massive $729 million wind project in Sweetwater County just months ago, likely due to new federal permitting pauses on some renewable energy projects touching federal land. The loss stung, but the company kept moving on other Wyoming developments.

The Florida-based company is now advancing several promising projects across the state. The Chugwater Energy Project in Platte County would combine 300 megawatts of wind, 150 megawatts of solar, and 150 megawatts of battery storage. In Albany County, NextEra is developing the 160-megawatt Sailors Solar project on land leased from the city of Laramie.

The Bright Side

Wyoming's renewable energy story extends well beyond one company's transmission agreement. The massive Chokecherry and Sierra Madre Wind Energy Project is already under construction in Carbon County, a $5 billion development that will generate 3,550 megawatts when complete. That makes it one of the largest onshore wind facilities in North America.

Even smaller players are jumping in. Powder River Energy Corporation, a member-owned electric cooperative, plans to build the LaBelle Prairie Project in northeast Wyoming, combining 1.5 megawatts of solar with battery storage for up to 5 megawatts.

Local communities still have their say. NextEra won state approval for the Chugwater project in February, but it still needs approval from Platte County's planning board and commissioners in May. Some residents want officials to carefully weigh the broader impact of multiple large projects in their area.

The transmission agreement proves that renewable energy developers see a future in Wyoming worth investing in, even when the path forward gets bumpy.
