Xavier University Ranks #4 Among Private HBCUs

A small Catholic university in New Orleans is proving that faith-based education and career success make a powerful combination.

Xavier University of Louisiana just claimed the #4 spot among private HBCUs in Forbes' inaugural ranking of historically Black colleges that best prepare graduates for success. Founded in 1915 by St. Katharine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, Xavier has spent over a century turning its mission of serving underrepresented Black students into real-world results.

The numbers tell an impressive story. Xavier graduates earn an average of $56,700 early in their careers, jumping to $104,100 by mid-career. Forbes weighed factors including alumni networks, graduation rates, post-graduate salaries, and student debt to create their rankings.

But Xavier's most remarkable achievement goes beyond paychecks. The university produces more African American medical school students than any other institution in the United States. Its pre-med, biology, chemistry, pharmacy, and neuroscience programs have become pipelines for diversifying healthcare.

The Ripple Effect

Xavier's success is creating waves far beyond its campus. Every Black doctor, pharmacist, and scientist the university produces helps address the critical shortage of minority healthcare providers in underserved communities. The Forbes recognition joins other recent honors. LinkedIn ranked Xavier #8 among HBCUs in its 2026 Top Colleges list. The United Negro College Fund also presented Xavier with its 2026 Institutional Excellence Award for "academic excellence, transformative innovation and an unwavering commitment to student success."

As the nation's only Catholic HBCU, Xavier demonstrates what happens when education roots itself in service and social justice. The university's founders envisioned creating "a more just and humane society" through educating Black students.
