Yankees Rookie Lombard Shines as Cole Hits Franchise Milestone

The milestone moment came when Cole caught Matt Olson looking at a 98.8 mph fastball to end the fifth inning. Cole reached 1,000 strikeouts in just 139 games, crushing the previous record held by CC Sabathia at 162 games.

"It was really cool to do it today," Cole said after his seven-inning, nine-strikeout performance. "I just feel really blessed."

But the day belonged just as much to Lombard, who manager Aaron Boone said has proven he's ready for the big stage. The rookie opened the game with smooth defense, casually retiring the first batter like he'd been doing it for years.

Later, Lombard scored from first base on a triple before crushing his second career home run in the seventh inning. He joins an exclusive club as only the seventh Yankee to hit two homers in his first four games, and the first since Jasson Domínguez in 2023.

Fellow rookie Spencer Jones added to the celebration with a run-scoring single and a triple, driving in two runs against former Cy Young winner Chris Sale. Jones praised Lombard's focus, noting that even after the game, the young player was already studying film of Sunday's opposing pitcher.

"He's super mature for his age. He loves baseball," Jones said. "It just kind of shows you where his head is at."
