Zambia and Norway Partner for 300 MW Solar Energy Project

A bold partnership between Zambia and Norway is opening doors for clean energy investments that could transform how millions of Zambians power their homes.

The Zambian government just announced a call for proposals targeting up to 300 megawatts of solar power projects with battery storage. That's enough electricity to power hundreds of thousands of homes while reducing the country's dependence on coal-fired plants.

The program works through an innovative Carbon Feed-In Premium system that gives developers fixed carbon price payments for at least 10 years. These payments bridge the financial gap that often prevents clean energy projects from getting off the ground, making it possible for projects that might otherwise never happen.

Developers have until May 31, 2026, to submit their proposals for solar installations between 30 and 100 megawatts. Each project must include at least 30 minutes of battery storage to ensure reliable power delivery even when the sun isn't shining.

Norway's partnership enables Zambia to generate internationally recognized carbon credits while building crucial renewable infrastructure. The arrangement creates a win-win situation where Zambia gets cleaner energy and Norway can count the emissions reductions toward its climate commitments.

Projects must be ready to go but not yet started, with completed feasibility studies, secured land, and environmental clearances already in hand. The Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation will purchase the power, ensuring a stable revenue stream for successful developers.

The partnership also builds on Zambia's growing renewable energy momentum. In 2023, the country secured a separate $2 billion commitment from UAE-based Masdar for solar development, showing increasing international confidence in Zambia's clean energy future.

Final project selections are expected by the end of June 2026, setting the stage for construction to begin soon after. As these solar installations come online over the next several years, they'll help Zambia meet growing electricity demand without adding to its carbon footprint.
