BYD Offers 18 Months Free 5-Minute EV Charging in China

Imagine charging your car faster than filling a gas tank and not paying a cent for a year and a half.

BYD, China's leading electric vehicle maker, just launched that exact deal. Buyers of the new Song Ultra EV get 18 months of free charging at the company's Flash Charging stations, where the battery goes from 10% to 70% in just five minutes.

The timing couldn't be better. Gas prices in China are rising for the fifth time this year, with 92-octane fuel climbing back to 9 yuan per liter. In the US, prices jumped 33% in just one month, hitting $3.88 per gallon on Thursday.

BYD's new Blade Battery 2.0 technology makes the speed possible. The charging stations pump out up to 1,500 kilowatts of power, designed like traditional gas stations to move vehicles through quickly. A full charge from 10% to 97% takes just nine minutes.

The Song Ultra EV rolled into dealerships across 22 Chinese cities this week. Starting at 155,000 yuan (about $22,500), the midsize SUV can travel up to 440 miles on a single charge. Even in freezing temperatures of negative 20 degrees Fahrenheit, the battery charges from 20% to 97% in just 12 minutes.

Lu Tian, general manager of BYD's Dynasty Online Sales Division, said buyers could save nearly 20,000 yuan with the free charging offer. "Instead of worrying about oil prices every day, it is better to put it in place in one step and completely worry-free," he said.

The Ripple Effect

BYD stopped making gas-only vehicles back in 2022, betting everything on electric and plug-in hybrid technology. That gamble paid off. The company ranked sixth in global vehicle sales last year, outselling Ford for the first time and trailing only giants like Toyota and Volkswagen.

The advance in battery and charging technology addresses the two biggest concerns people have about electric vehicles: range and charging time. With five-minute charging becoming reality, EVs now match the convenience of gas-powered cars while offering lower operating costs and the option to use renewable energy.

As battery technology continues improving and more automakers invest in ultra-fast charging networks, the era of waiting hours to charge an electric vehicle is ending. What took overnight a few years ago now happens faster than a coffee break.
