China Plans 370GW of Clean Energy in Five Years

China just set an ambitious goal that could reshape global clean energy, and the numbers are staggering.

The country's National Development and Reform Commission announced its 15th Five-Year Plan for renewable energy, targeting 370 gigawatts of new wind and solar capacity across just seven bases by 2030. To put that in perspective, that's enough to power hundreds of millions of homes.

The massive buildout will span Xinjiang, the Hexi Corridor, the Yellow River Bend, northern Hebei, and the Songliao Basin. These aren't typical solar farms. China is building solar panels in deserts and on wasteland, turning barren areas into clean energy powerhouses while restoring damaged ecosystems.

The plan tackles one of renewable energy's biggest challenges: storage and transmission. Each base will include pumped storage, concentrated solar power, and advanced energy storage systems to ensure the power reaches cities when needed.

But China isn't stopping at these mega-projects. The plan also supports smaller, decentralized wind and solar installations across the country, spreading clean energy benefits far and wide.

By 2030, China aims to generate 6,000 terawatt hours of renewable electricity annually. Wind and solar will make up half of the country's total power capacity and provide 30 percent of all electricity generated. That's a dramatic shift for a nation that has historically relied heavily on coal.

The plan extends beyond electricity too. Renewable energy will power heating systems, produce hydrogen fuel, and provide raw materials for industries. These non-power applications will grow 1.5 times from 2025 levels.
