Driver Saves Pregnant Woman—Baby Born Hours Later on Mom's Birthday

A morning commute turned into a life-saving moment when Logan Hayes jumped into a cold pond to rescue a pregnant woman from her sinking car near Interstate 95 in Martin County, Florida. What he didn't know was that his split-second decision would give two people a second chance at life.

Hayes was driving to work when he spotted the vehicle submerged in water. Without thinking twice, he plunged in and swam 30 feet toward the sinking car as water rushed inside.

Through the window, he could see the driver panicking. "I could see her sitting in the driver's seat and just kind of looking around like what do I do, and I just said, 'You have to come to me,'" Hayes recalled.

He reached through the back door and pulled her out with seconds to spare. "I grabbed her, I knew immediately… 'Oh my God, this lady is pregnant,'" he said.

The woman, Sheldy Apollon, had been dealing with preeclampsia and felt dizzy while driving that morning. She tried to pull over but suffered a medical emergency and lost control of the vehicle, sending it into the lake.

First responders rushed Apollon to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital. Just hours after the terrifying rescue, she gave birth to a baby girl, Ivory Atara Sulley, who weighed 3 pounds and 14 ounces.

The timing made the day even more remarkable. Ivory was born on February 10, which also happened to be Apollon's birthday.

"Now that we share our birthday, our bond is just tighter than ever," Apollon said.

This story reminds us that everyday heroes walk among us. Hayes wasn't trained for water rescue or emergency response, but he acted anyway because someone needed help.

Apollon's fiancé, Woodley Sully, put it simply: "The only way I can explain this is God… You just have to believe… my girls are here, so I'm grateful."

Baby Ivory spent a short time in the NICU to grow stronger while her mother recovered. When Apollon finally held her daughter, she described the moment as surreal, feeling her baby's heartbeat against her own.

Hayes says he's still processing what happened that day and feels honored to be part of something so meaningful.
