Ex-SpaceX Engineers Build $749 Water Purifier for Disasters

Former SpaceX engineers just made clean drinking water possible from any source on Earth, including the ocean.

California startup Vital Lyfe unveiled Access, a portable filtration system the size of a small cooler that automatically purifies contaminated or saltwater into safe drinking water. The 25-pound device can process 12 gallons of fresh water per hour or 6 gallons of seawater per hour with just the push of a button.

The system works by automatically regulating pressure and filtration without any user training needed. Drop a pipe into any water source, press start, and the Access does the rest using reverse osmosis membranes and UV-C light to remove impurities and kill bacteria.

The device runs on a built-in battery for up to three hours or plugs into any standard power source for continuous operation. An output sensor constantly monitors contamination levels before dispensing water, ensuring safety with every pour.

Vital Lyfe designed Access specifically for disaster relief, off-grid living, and water-scarce regions where clean drinking water can mean the difference between life and death. The company recently completed successful field demonstrations of the technology in Colombia, proving it works in real-world conditions.

The Ripple Effect

The timing couldn't be more critical. Millions of people worldwide lack access to clean drinking water, and climate change is intensifying droughts and natural disasters that disrupt water supplies.

At $749, Access costs more than manual filtration systems but requires no pumping and delivers far more water per hour. The company expects the device to last 6,000 hours filtering saltwater and even longer with fresh water, with replacement membranes costing just $30.

The startup has raised $24 million to bring the technology to market, with pre-orders shipping later in 2026. First responders in disaster-prone areas and people living off-grid are already lining up to order.

While the current price may put it out of reach for some developing communities, Vital Lyfe plans to optimize production to make future versions more affordable. The company envisions a world where clean water becomes accessible to everyone, regardless of location or circumstances.

For now, the Access represents a major step forward in portable water purification technology that could save countless lives in emergencies and give independence to people living far from municipal water systems.
