Medtronic unveiled Touch Surgery Aide this week at the Society of Robotic Surgery meeting in Hollywood, Florida. The AI-powered platform runs on the company's Hugo robotic surgery system, providing surgeons with actionable insights while they operate.
The system uses computer vision and multimodal AI to analyze surgical video in real time. It can run multiple AI applications simultaneously during live procedures, processing what's happening and offering support in the moment.
The first FDA-cleared application is called Instrument Exit Point. It alerts surgeons with a visual notification when instruments move beyond the visible field of view during robotic procedures. Think of it as an extra set of eyes watching over every movement.
Medtronic built the platform in collaboration with NVIDIA, incorporating advanced computing infrastructure. The technology connects the entire surgical journey, from pre-operative planning and training to post-operative insights and continuous improvement.

The Hugo robotic surgery system has already been used in tens of thousands of procedures across more than 35 countries on six continents. It received FDA clearance for urologic procedures in December 2025, with submissions pending for general and gynecologic specialties.
