Newcastle Star Dan Burn Funds Gaming Room for Young Patients

A professional footballer just made hospital visits less scary for kids in his hometown, one gaming console at a time.

Dan Burn, who plays defense for Newcastle United and the England national team, donated funds to create a fully equipped gaming room at Blyth Community Hospital's children's outpatient department. The space features gaming equipment, a large screen television, and comfortable gaming chairs designed to help older children feel more relaxed before and after their medical appointments.

The 6'7" defender visited the hospital last week to see the finished room and meet the young patients who use it. He spent about an hour chatting with families, signing shirts, taking photos, and even leaving his signature on the wall with the message "keep smiling."

"After chatting with some children, it is really good to hear that the gaming room is making a difference to them," Burn said during his visit. He joked that he was relieved nobody challenged him to play since he hadn't touched a gaming console in quite a while.

Nadia Conway, matron at Northumbria Healthcare, praised Burn's generosity and personal touch. "The gaming equipment he has funded will help older children, who may be anxious when they attend their hospital appointments, to feel more relaxed," she explained. She added that staff, patients, and families were thrilled to meet the friendly footballer who took time from his busy schedule to visit.

The Ripple Effect

Burn's donation through Bright Northumbria Healthcare Charity represents just one of many projects the organization supports to improve patient experiences. The charity, founded in 1998, funds everything from medical equipment to staff wellbeing programs and research initiatives.

This wasn't Burn's first appearance at Blyth Community Hospital either. A year and a half earlier, he officially opened the hospital's newly refurbished children's outpatient and adult inpatient wards, showing his continued commitment to healthcare in his home region.

The footballer, who started his career at nearby Darlington in 2009 before returning to Newcastle United in 2022, continues to give back to the community that shaped him.

Young patients now have a bright, comfortable space to distract themselves from medical worries, thanks to one athlete who remembered where he came from.
