NYC Gets 20% Cleaner Energy from 339-Mile Buried Line

New York City just got a huge boost in its fight for cleaner air and reliable power. The Champlain Hudson Power Express, a 339-mile transmission line buried underground and underwater from Montreal to Queens, is now delivering emission-free hydropower to the nation's largest city.

The numbers tell an impressive story. This new line will provide up to 20% of New York City's energy needs, powering over 1 million homes with clean electricity. By 2040, it will cut carbon emissions by 37 million metric tons.

Governor Kathy Hochul championed the project as one of her first major initiatives, and construction began in 2022 after years of planning. The line connects directly to the Astoria Energy Complex in Queens, bringing 1,250 megawatts of clean power right where it's needed most.

The timing matters more than ever. When the Indian Point nuclear plant closed, New York City had to rely more heavily on gas-fired plants that increased harmful emissions. This new transmission line helps fill that gap with cleaner energy.

The project created real economic opportunity along the way. More than 1,400 construction and operations jobs supported families across the state, with multiple union agreements totaling over three million labor hours. The $3.4 billion investment over the 25-year contract period brings long-term economic benefits to New York.

Communities that have suffered most from air pollution stand to gain the most. A $40 million Green Economy Fund has already awarded $2 million to organizations focused on disadvantaged communities, helping residents access clean energy jobs and training.

The Ripple Effect goes beyond just New York. This is the longest fully buried transmission line in North America, setting a new standard for how to build major infrastructure with minimal environmental disruption. By burying the entire line underground and underwater, engineers protected the landscape while ensuring long-term reliability.

The strategic burial also means fewer weather-related outages and less visual impact on communities along the route. Local municipalities and counties that host the line worked closely with developers to minimize disruption while maximizing benefits.

The project demonstrates what's possible when governments work across borders on climate solutions. The partnership between New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, Transmission Developers Inc, and Hydro-Québec shows how regions can share clean energy resources effectively.

For New Yorkers, the immediate impact means cleaner air, more reliable power, and lower energy costs as the city reduces reliance on expensive gas-powered generation. The diverse energy mix now includes firm, reliable hydropower that works around the clock, unlike solar or wind that depend on weather conditions.
