Philippines Gets 422 MW Floating Solar Farm Portfolio

Imagine solar panels floating on water, soaking up sunshine while fish swim beneath them. That's exactly what's coming to the Philippines, and it's 85 times bigger than the country's first floating solar farm.

Vietnamese solar developer VinEnergo just partnered with SunAsia Energy to build 422 megawatts of floating solar power across three locations in the Philippines. For context, that's enough clean electricity to power hundreds of thousands of homes.

The project includes nearly 700,000 solar modules spread across sites in Macabebe, Sagay, and Silay. The solar panels will sit on structures above the water, leaving plenty of room for fish farming and other aquaculture activities below.

This marks VinEnergo's first project in the Filipino market. The company will also build 62 kilometers of new transmission lines to deliver the clean power where it's needed most.

Just eleven months ago, the Philippines celebrated its first floating solar farm with less than 5 megawatts of capacity. Now the country is jumping to projects more than 80 times that size, showing how quickly clean energy solutions can scale when they work.

The Ripple Effect

This project does something remarkable. It solves two challenges at once instead of forcing communities to choose between them.

Filipinos won't have to give up productive fishing waters to gain clean energy infrastructure. The floating panels actually help by providing shade that can reduce water evaporation and control algae growth, creating better conditions for fish below.

The model also strengthens energy security for a nation vulnerable to fuel price swings and supply disruptions. By generating power locally from endless sunshine, the Philippines gains more control over its energy future.

SunAsia Energy CEO Tetchi Capellan said the partnership aims to strengthen energy security, support economic growth, and help protect the planet. The floating solar model creates a framework where food production and clean energy generation thrive together.
