Rare 'Mono Mono' Twins Celebrate First Birthday After Beating Odds

When Carrie Zirbes learned she was pregnant with twins, she had no idea just how extraordinary her pregnancy would be. Doctors soon revealed she was carrying monoamniotic twins, a condition so rare it occurs in only 1 in 10,000 pregnancies.

Unlike typical twins, monoamniotic (or "mono mono") twins share both a placenta and an amniotic sac. This creates serious risks because their umbilical cords can tangle, potentially cutting off oxygen and blood supply to the babies.

"I think I'm still trying to wrap my head around how rare it is, actually," Carrie said. Already a mother of three, she suddenly faced one of the most complicated pregnancies possible.

Doctors placed Carrie on hospital bed rest to monitor the babies around the clock. As the pregnancy progressed, complications mounted when one twin began transfusing blood to the other, leaving Baby A dangerously small with an enlarged heart.

At 30 weeks, doctors decided they couldn't wait any longer. The delivery brought terrifying moments when Fiona, who had been Baby A during pregnancy, wasn't breathing and required immediate intubation.

Both girls spent weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit while medical teams worked to stabilize them. After what felt like an eternity of uncertainty, Carrie and her husband finally heard the words they'd been praying for: their daughters were healthy enough to come home.
