San Francisco Adding 100 Curbside EV Chargers

San Francisco is making it easier for thousands of renters and apartment dwellers to go electric with a plan to add 100 new curbside charging stations across the city.

The new chargers will join an impressive network of over 1,700 public charging ports already scattered throughout San Francisco. That's more charging stations than gas pumps in a city where EVs now make up 7% of all registered vehicles.

For the 30,000 San Francisco residents who already drive electric, this expansion solves a real problem. About 80% of EV charging typically happens at home, but many city dwellers don't have driveways or garages with electrical outlets.

Curbside chargers let these drivers power up while they sleep, work, or run errands. A full charge costs around $14 at these neighborhood stations, compared to $40 or more to fill a gas tank.

The city isn't just thinking about convenience. San Francisco has committed to reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, and supporting electric vehicles is a cornerstone of that plan.
