After years of abuse and instability as a child in Uganda, Peter Mutabazi promised himself something powerful: he would become the adult he once desperately needed.
Nine years ago, the Charlotte resident took an unconventional path. As a single man with no parenting experience, he opened his home to foster children who needed love and safety.
"I was single most of life, wasn't a parent at all," Peter said. "So, being a dad wasn't something part of my everyday life."
That changed quickly. Over the past nine years, Peter has fostered 47 children, giving each one a safe place to land during their most vulnerable moments.
The joy of hearing kids call him "Dad" still catches him off guard. "What, me?" he said with a smile, describing the feeling as pure happiness.
Online, thousands know him as "Foster Dad Flipper" through his social media posts about foster care and adoption. But his mission comes from lived experience, not internet fame.

Peter remembers what it felt like to be unwanted and unsafe. "I was one of those kids," he said. "I came from an abusive family. I was unwanted, never felt safe at any time as a little boy."
Someone eventually took him in and changed everything. Now he pays that gift forward, one child at a time.
Earlier this month, Peter shared news that moved his followers to tears. A boy named Jacob, who had spent more than four years in foster care before coming to Peter, officially became Elijah Mutabazi.
"Today is Day 1 of a new chapter," Peter wrote in his adoption announcement. "A name that represents not just a change, but a promise of love, of stability, of forever."
Sunny's Take
Peter's story reminds us that the hardest childhoods can grow the biggest hearts. He didn't let his painful past define his future. Instead, he transformed it into purpose.
For 47 children who walked through his door uncertain and afraid, Peter became proof that family isn't always about biology. It's about showing up, staying present, and choosing love every single day.
Every child deserves to feel safe, valued, and wanted. Peter makes sure the kids in his care know exactly what that feels like, one "Dad" at a time.
