Solar EV Startup Aptera Rolls First Car Off Assembly Line

A futuristic three-wheeled car that runs on sunlight just became real, marking an incredible comeback for a company that almost disappeared 14 years ago.

California-based Aptera announced on March 3 that its first vehicle rolled off a new validation assembly line. The solar-powered electric autocycle represents a milestone moment for a startup that's been chasing an ambitious dream since 2006.

The company initially secured a $150 million Energy Department loan guarantee in its early years, but when investors backed out, Aptera shut down in 2011. Fast forward to 2020, and founders decided to try again with improved technology and a clearer vision.

This isn't your typical electric car. Aptera's two-seater looks more like something from a sci-fi movie, with a lightweight carbon fiber body and three wheels instead of four. The design requires just a standard driver's license, not a motorcycle license, making it accessible to everyday commuters.

The magic happens in the engineering. Built-in solar panels generate enough electricity for 40 miles of daily driving without ever plugging in. For longer trips, the battery system extends range up to 1,000 miles on a single charge.

The timing couldn't be better. In January 2025, Aptera locked down a seven-year battery supply deal with LG Energy Solutions, giving the company solid ground for scaling up production. They also partnered with battery manufacturer CTNS to support future growth.

The validation line currently has 14 stations producing low volumes for testing. Each vehicle will undergo thermal validation, brake performance checks, and safety testing as Aptera works toward EPA certification and regulatory approvals.

Cargo space surprised even skeptics. The compact vehicle offers 60% more storage than a Honda Accord and 20% more than a Prius, making it practical for grocery runs, commutes, and weekend adventures.

The Ripple Effect

Aptera's success signals a broader shift in how we think about personal transportation. Other automakers including Toyota have started exploring three-wheeled electric vehicles, recognizing potential for efficient urban mobility.

The company's no-welding assembly process and recyclable materials point toward more sustainable manufacturing practices. If solar-powered daily driving catches on, it could reshape expectations for what electric vehicles can deliver.

Aptera isn't targeting everyone. The avant-garde design appeals to drivers seeking novelty and efficiency over conventional styling. But for commuters in sunny climates who could eliminate charging sessions entirely, that tradeoff might be worth it.

Production vehicles will continue rolling off the line in coming weeks as the company expands its validation fleet. Each car brings Aptera closer to delivering sellable vehicles to customers who've been waiting years for this moment.
